Twenty early stage companies chosen to participate in virtual accelerator and compete for $325,000 in prizes

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 21, 2016) AdvaMed 2016: The MedTech Conference, the leading event for medical technology professionals across North America, announced today that 20 early stage companies have been selected to participate in the MedTech Innovator virtual accelerator and competition, held in partnership with AdvaMed Accel.

“A total of 430 companies applied to participate in MedTech Innovator this year – a new record and a testament to the value this program provides to the medical technology industry,” said Paul Grand, managing director, RCT Ventures and head of MedTech Innovator. “This year’s selection process was a four month global effort involving 90 reviewers from more than 50 companies, including manufacturers, providers, investors and our sponsoring partners like Johnson & Johnson, the Cottrell Foundation, RCT Ventures, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), Enterprise Ireland, and IDA.”

MedTech Innovator’s Semi-Finalists are diverse in their geographies, sectors, and leadership. Eleven of the companies are developing medical devices, five are in the diagnostic sector, and seven are developing digital health technologies. Several of the companies have consumer health products, and five of the companies have female founders or CEOs. The Semi-Finalists are based in states across the U.S., including Texas, Colorado, Washington, Oklahoma, Michigan, Maryland, and California. Six of the companies are based in other countries, including Israel, France, Germany, and Ireland.  The full list can be found here: https://medtechinnovator.org/2016semifinalists.

“We are pleased to be a founding sponsor of MedTech Innovator and we congratulate the Semi-Finalists,” said Susan Morano, vice president, business development, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices. “Innovation is critical to the future of medical technology and we are honored to be part of this program which fuels the early innovation ecosystem.”

The Semi-Finalists will next move on to a showcase and the first round of the competition at the Wilson Sonsini Medical Device conference in San Francisco June 23 – 24 where one company will receive a $25,000 Value award. They will then participate in a four-month virtual accelerator program with mentorship by leading players in the industry. The program will culminate with all 20 Semi-Finalists being showcased at AdvaMed 2016, and four finalists will be selected to compete in a plenary session at the conference for $250,000 in cash prizes, $50,000 in services, and exposure to leaders in the field. Attendees will listen to pitches from the four companies and select the winner by audience vote.

“Whoever thinks medtech innovation is slowing down simply needs to view the MedTech Innovator Competition this year,” said Ellen Strahlman, executive vice president of R&D and chief medical officer at BD. “Medtech innovation is alive and well and the program has been a great way for BD to collaborate with startups on new ideas, technologies and business models to advance healthcare delivery.  BD’s participation remains an important part of our innovation activities.”
