Starling Surgical Wins MedTech Innovator 2019 Execution Award and Receives AdvaMed Accel Virginia Shimer Rybski Memorial Award at The MedTech Conference
BOSTON, MASS. September 23, 2019 – MedTech Innovator, the premier nonprofit startup accelerator in the medical technology industry, and AdvaMed Accel, the leading advocacy association for emerging medtech firms, today announced that Starling Surgical has been awarded the 2019 Virginia Shimer Rybski Memorial Award and MedTech Innovator Execution Award.
Both awards recognize the potential of a promising entrepreneur or entrepreneurial medical technology company. The recipient was chosen today via a live audience vote at the AdvaMed Accel Leadership Seminar in Boston during The MedTech Conference, the largest gathering of medtech industry leaders in North America powered by AdvaMed.
Starling Surgical, based in Dublin, is developing a wound closure device designed to meticulously perform surgical sutures with the speed and convenience of a skin stapler. The company’s product is designed to change the way surgical wounds are closed.
“We are pleased to recognize Starling Surgical with the 2019 Execution Award,” said Paul Grand, CEO of MedTech Innovator. “The Starling Surgical team and all six MedTech Innovator Accelerator companies that competed for this award demonstrated incredible leadership and strategy over the course of the program. We look forward to watching these teams continue to drive advancements that reflect our shared passion for improving the lives of patients and transforming the health care system.”
“All six of these MedTech Innovator Accelerator companies stand out for their unwavering dedication to innovation that will tangibly impact patients and address unmet needs in the current health care landscape. We are thrilled to recognize Starling Surgical as the Virginia Shimer Rybski Memorial Award winner,” said Ashley Wittorf, executive director of AdvaMed Accel. “This award recognizes the Starling Surgical team’s dedication to developing new wound closure device that will improve care for people undergoing surgical procedures.”
The Execution Award, presented jointly by AdvaMed Accel and MedTech Innovator, recognizes strong leadership teams with next-generation innovations and the resources to successfully execute on their goals of improving patient care.
The Virginia Shimer Rybski Memorial Award was created to encourage the enthusiastic pursuit of business excellence in the medical technology industry. It is named after the late entrepreneur and patient care advocate Virginia Rybski, president & CEO of Regenesis Biomedical and a member of AdvaMed’s Board of Directors and the association’s Accel Executive Committee, who passed away in 2013. The award is presented each year during the association’s annual meeting to a single presenting company or entrepreneur.
This year’s award includes a $10,000 grant from AdvaMed Accel and a $15,000 prize from MedTech Innovator to be applied towards expenses required for commercializing an innovative medical technology. Additionally, the winning company received a profile in MedTech Strategist and will also receive a complimentary one-year membership with AdvaMed and full-access registration to The MedTech Conference in Toronto, Oct. 5-7, 2020.
