Olfactomics smart scalpel is an add-on to existing energy-based surgical instruments. It analyzes the surgical smoke that evaporates from the tissues as the surgeon operates. Surgical smoke contains detailed information on the operated tissue and thus gives the surgeon significantly enhanced situational awareness. This enables the surgeon to detect cancerous tissue at margins that may otherwise go unnoticed and result in expensive re-operations. This is the case in 20% of surgeries for breast cancer and the total annual market is over 2B USD. The device has no direct contact with the patient and is compatible with existing instruments. Because of innovative sensor technology and leveraging machine learning technogies, the device is economically viable addition to every operation room where cancer patients are routinely operated. The device has been pre-clinically validated for breast and brain malignancies.
