Osteoporosis weakens bones as we age, affecting 50 million Americans, and women disproportionately. Half of all women will fracture a bone in their lifetime, according to Laura Yecies, CEO of Osteoboost, and hip fractures in old age often lead to complications or death. Mechanical loading associated with stepping and jumping maintains bone strength, but those actions decrease with age. Osteoboost was inspired by technology used to provide that mechanical loading for astronauts to stay healthy in space. The FDA-cleared vibrating belt worn around the hips consistently reduced spinal bone loss in study participants by 85%.
