Past MTI Fellows



Alex Shen, PhD

Alex is the Managing Director of the Business of Science Center (BSC) and an EIR at the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. Prior to joining the BSC, Alex was a Senior Product Development Engineer and the New Product Development Lead at InHealth Technologies, a division of Freudenberg Medical, LLC. While an MTI intern, he became a founding member of Spinal Singularity, a portfolio company in the 2015 MedTech Innovator Accelerator. Alex received his BS, MS, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus in Microelectromechanical Systems and Nanotechnology, from UCLA.




Christina Vorvis, PhD

Christina is a Senior Associate at OrbiMed Advisors. Prior to joining OrbiMed, she was a Licensing Associate in business development at Amgen. Christina also interned as a Technology Transfer Fellow at UCLA’s Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Sponsored Research, where she focused on marketing life science innovations. Christina earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Ph.D. in Oncology from UCLA.




David Tannin, MSc

David is a senior consultant in commercial strategy & planning at Syneos Health Consulting. Prior to joining Syneos Health Consulting, David was an analyst at Locust Walk Partners, where he provided analytical support in business development and fundraising for early stage to mid-size life science companies. While finishing up his studies, David completed various business development, investment, and consulting projects at Biogen, Coulter Translational Partnership, and MedTech Innovator. David earned an MSc in Management of Drug Development from USC and a BS in Biopsychology from the UC Santa Barbara.



 


Johnny El Chemmas, MBA, PharmD

Johnny is a Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development at Omnicell. Prior to Omnicell, he was a Venture Associate at MedTech Innovator where he performed diligence on early-stage health tech startups and worked with partners and sponsors, such as Amgen, Baxter, Becton Dickinson, Johnson & Johnson, and others. Before joining MedTech Innovator, Johnny practiced pharmacy at CVS/Health and Target Pharmacy. Johnny holds an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, a PharmD from the University of Michigan and a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University.




 


Kathryn Zavala, PhD

Kathryn began her career at MTI as an intern and is now VP of Operations & Business Development. She previously held a position as Senior Technology Fellow at the UCLA Technology Development Group, where she assisted with the commercialization of university technologies. At Campbell Alliance, Kathryn developed launch strategies for biopharma clients. She received her Bachelor’s from UC Berkeley, where she majored in Molecular and Cell Biology and Rhetoric. Kathryn earned her PhD in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from UCLA.
