mOm Incubators aims to give every child the best start in life through smarter healthcare technology
Patient Stories: How MedTech Innovator alumni are transforming lives
At MedTech Innovator, we empower healthtech companies to bring groundbreaking solutions to patients in need. Our Patient Stories series highlights the real-world clinical impact of the companies we support—showcasing how their technologies are transforming patient care, improving outcomes, and advancing healthcare.
In the UK, there are 600,000 babies born every year. Of these babies born, up to 16% may have complications or issues causing the babies to be transferred to a NICU for treatment, separating families and causing avoidable strain on the health system. While there is no single solution to this problem, the mOm Incubator can care for babies born from 30 weeks gestation onward. This accommodates almost 90% of all babies that require NICU care, according to Bliss data.
mOm Incubators to the rescue
At mOm Incubators Ltd (mOm), our vision is to give every child the best start in life through smarter healthcare technology. Our first product, the mOm Essential Incubator is a first-of-its-kind, novel incubation system that allows incubators to be used anywhere in a hospital. This keeps parents closer to their newborns at the time of birth and improves outcomes and bonding between newborns and parents, whilst reducing cost and the burden on the health system and parents. Due to the flexible nature of the device, mOm incubators are also being used to impact lives in conflict zones and difficult-to-reach areas globally.
Using our device, clinicians can ensure babies remain close to their families during their first days of life and better support Family Integrated care, a collaborative model of neonatal care that aims to address the negative impacts of the NICU environment by involving parents as equal partners, minimizing separation, and supporting parent‐infant closeness. Furthermore, we have also seen the potential to stop a cascading effect where a baby develops respiratory distress and mild hypoglycemia by stabilizing their temperature earlier through use of a mOm incubator. Babies in difficult-to-reach areas of the world have also been saved by our device, particularly in rural areas that are isolated or in war zones where there are no other healthcare solutions available.
We estimate that mOm incubators have impacted more than 11,000 babies in 6 countries globally. Early data shows that babies have a much faster time to reach normothermia than other methods and very positive qualitative data from clinicians and parents, in both high-resource settings and difficult-to-reach areas.
Design beyond neonatal care
As a company, we aim to use collected data to expand the mOm Essential Incubator globally in different use cases. We are changing the way that neonatal care is delivered, allowing clinicians the flexibility to choose the best way to cater to a baby’s individual needs.
We have taken a traditionally difficult-to-suit and bulky piece of equipment and greatly simplified it for the clinician, meaning it can go anywhere. This is something that was not possible previously. We are excited to apply this mindset to other devices/products and care for the child after birth and along the developmental journey.
